BPC-157 Regulation Timeline: Key Dates and Decisions
Chronological timeline of BPC-157 regulatory decisions. FDA actions, WADA listings, warning letters and compounding committee votes by date.
BPC-157 regulatory history stretches for over twenty years going back to the beginning of its research outlining. This timeline marks every significant events occurring in relation to regulations along with their dates, sources and context.
BPC-157 Regulatory Timeline
- 1990s-2000s BPC-157 identified as a peptide fragment of body protection compound (BPC) derived from human gastric juice. Research published primarily by Professor Predrag Sikiric's group at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. Animal studies reported effects on tissue repair, angiogenesis and inflammation. No regulatory action taken during this period.
- 2015-2019 BPC-157 becomes commercially available from online peptide vendors in the US, primarily marketed as a research chemical. Sales grow through fitness, bodybuilding and biohacking communities. The FDA has not addressed BPC-157 specifically during this period.
- July 30, 2019 FDA issues warning letter to PD Labs (Prescription Dispensing Laboratories Inc) for compounding with BPC-157 acetate. First FDA enforcement action specifically citing BPC-157. Violations: no USP/NF monograph, not component of approved drug, not on 503A bulks list.
- April 1, 2020 FDA issues warning letter to Tailor Made Compounding LLC for compounding with BPC-157. Violations: same 503A criteria. Also cited cGMP violations.
- November 10, 2021 FDA issues warning letter to Guyer Institute / Advanced Nutriceuticals LLC. Letter notes BPC-157 "was not nominated for inclusion on the 503A bulks list" and products compounded with it were ineligible for Section 503A exemptions.
- September 2021 WADA announces the 2022 Prohibited List, which for the first time names BPC-157 as an example substance under S0 (Non-Approved Substances). Previous lists covered BPC-157 implicitly under S0's catch-all language.
- January 1, 2022 WADA 2022 Prohibited List takes effect. BPC-157 is now explicitly named as a prohibited substance in sport worldwide. All WADA-signatory anti-doping organizations begin enforcing the explicit listing.
- June 12, 2023 FDA issues warning letter to Warrior Labz SARMS. Significant because the letter specifically addresses BPC-157 health claims (organ protection, ulcer prevention, wound healing) made despite a "research purpose only" label. FDA cites FD&C Act Sections 505(a) and 301(d).
- September 14, 2023 FDA issues untitled letter to Barclay, Luke & Pillai Specialty Pharmacy PLLC for compounding with BPC-157 acetate.
- September 2023 FDA places BPC-157 in Category 2 of its bulk drug substance evaluation. Category 2 = "substances with identified potential significant safety risks." FDA states BPC-157 "may pose risk for immunogenicity" and lacks sufficient safety data for human administration.
- June 2024 Australia's TGA classifies BPC-157 as Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine) under the Poisons Standard. Australia becomes the first country to specifically schedule BPC-157. Possession without prescription is now a regulatory breach.
- December 10, 2024 FDA issues warning letter to Prime Vitality Inc (dba Prime Peptides) for marketing unapproved new drugs including BPC-157.
- April 22, 2026 BPC-157 nominations withdrawn from FDA Category 2 evaluation. BPC-157 moves to "nominated but withdrawn" status. Removal from Category 2 does not automatically confer Category 1 (approved for compounding) status.
- April 27, 2026 Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES / Sport Integrity Canada) issues reminder that non-approved peptides including BPC-157 remain on the WADA Prohibited List.
- April 29, 2025 DoD Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) publishes advisory: "BPC-157: A Prohibited Peptide and an Unapproved Drug Found in Health and Wellness Products." States BPC-157 is not a dietary ingredient and is on the DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients List.
- March 31, 2026 FDA issues warning letter to Gram Peptides for marketing unapproved new drugs.
- May 19, 2026 FDA revises Import Alert 66-41 (unapproved new drugs), updating the framework for detaining unapproved drugs at the border.
- June 17, 2026 FDA issues warning letter to Wholesale Peptide.
- July 23-24, 2026 FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) meets to evaluate BPC-157 (free base) and BPC-157 acetate for the 503A bulks list. Despite FDA staff recommending against inclusion, the committee votes 8-6 (1 abstention) to recommend adding BPC-157. The vote is advisory and non-binding.
- August 2026 USADA updates its BPC-157 guidance for athletes, reaffirming prohibited status under S0.
- August 24, 2026 FDA issues three warning letters on the same day: Peak Performance Peptides, NuScience Peptides LLC and Peptide Partners LLC. Largest single-day enforcement action against peptide vendors.
What the Timeline Shows
Accelerating Enforcement
The frequency of the FDA's enforcement has increased. From just one warning letter issued in 2019, the agency is now busy handing out five of them in 2026 to take stock of all the players in the peptide market. The three letters sent out on August 24, 2026, reveal a coordinated effort as opposed to a mere series of actions triggered by customer complaints.
Regulatory Tension
The PCAC's decision to recommend BPC-157 for the 503A bulks list in a vote of 8-6 creates a conflict with the actions of the FDA against compounding pharmacies and sellers. The advisory committee voted in favor while the FDA voted against it. The way in which the FDA resolves this conflict regarding BPC-157 will be important for its future in the US market.
International Divergence
While Australia adopted clear scheduling, both Europe and the US have maintained BPC-157 in regulatory limbo. Such a shift leads to geographic discrepancies in the rules. An Australian buyer is clear on how to purchase legally (getting a prescription), whereas a buyer in the US must deal with ambiguities. It is more complicated for buyers in Europe, where each country has its own regulations.
FAQ - BPC-157 Regulation Timeline
When was the first FDA action against BPC-157?
The FDA issued a warning letter to PD Labs for compounding BPC-157 acetate on July 30, 2019. It was the first time BPC-157 had been specifically cited in an enforcement action.
When did WADA ban BPC-157?
“It has long been assumed that BPC-157 was implicitly prohibited under S0 (Non-Approved Substances) and it had indeed appeared on the 2022 Prohibited List for the first time, when it was first explicitly listed under the announcement of 2021.
